Senior Principal Structural Engineer

Location: Sacramento Region, California

Summary

The Senior Principal Structural Engineer position is responsible for the technical review of construction documents related to an array of buildings and other structures.  Reviews drawings, calculations, soils reports and other documents for conformance with the requirements of the California Building Standards Codes.  Uses engineering judgment to assess the adequacy of a design to address life-safety and other aspects of the code.  Mentors and trains other staff.  Review work performed by other staff.  Represent the company at meetings.  Performs complex code analysis to develop companywide policy.  Communicates orally and in writing to clients, applicants and other staff.  May serve a project manager on projects with multiple reviewers.  Typically reports to another Principal Structural Engineer or designated department manager.

Responsibilities

  • Strong understanding of California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, construction diagrams, plans, blueprints and specifications and evaluate them for compliance with governing codes and standards.
  • Exhibit sound judgment reading and interpreting code requirements.
  • Ability to suggest alternate forms of compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Train, coordinate, support and supervise staff.
  • Train and mentor plans examiners, plan check engineers and structural engineers.
  • Supervise multiple plans examiners, plan check engineers and/or structural engineers.
  • Prepare and present effective oral and written reports.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with government agencies, civic organizations, architects, contractors, engineers and the general public.
  • Represent the department at internal and external meetings.
  • Current on legal and technical developments pertaining to building construction and codes.
  • Function independently as an expert in matters of specialized code, rules, and policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • 20+ years of progressive engineering experience, including 10 years of reviewing plans for conformance to model codes.
  • 10+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Current PE California License is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Multiple ICC Certificates, including Plans Examiner Certification.
  • Additional Certifications: ICC Commercial Building, Mechanical, Plumbing & Electrical Inspection highly desirable.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat/Bluebeam).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent communicator and deals effectively with everyone regardless of level of technical expertise.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to drive to job sites and be able to walk in and through job sites for extended periods (jobsites under construction maybe muddy or dusty with steep or uneven terrain).
  • Able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. (about 3 times a day).
  • Sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work with detailed, finely printed documents (50% of the workday).
