Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Senior Construction Inspector to join our team in Southern California (Orange and/or Inland Empire offices). 

 Under general supervision, the Senior Construction Inspector performs detailed inspections of large, multi-disciplined public works and infrastructure construction and maintenance projects; integrates plans, details and specifications to ensure construction and contract compliance; prepares project inspection reports; and performs related duties as assigned Senior Construction Inspectors may oversee the work of one or more Construction Inspectors. 

Senior Construction Inspector is distinguished from the Construction Inspector in that the Senior Construction Inspector must possess current additional certifications and are expected to perform the more difficult, multi-disciplined inspections requiring greater knowledge of construction methods and specifications.   

Responsibilities

  • Performs project inspections and/or acts as supervising inspector on large construction projects; interprets and applies code requirements to assure compliance. 
  • Inspects properties and materials for compliance with plans, specifications and codes, including both new and existing improvements. 
  • Responds to questions and complaints regarding codes and regulations, inspection schedules, and inspection results. 
  • Confers with and provides information to developers, engineers, architects, property owners, contractors and others regarding specifications, provisions and City standards; resolves complaints and problems, in consultation with project managers, as needed. 
  • Maintains construction inspection files and logs; prepares reports, prepare weekly statement of working days, correspondence, and other written materials. 
  • Interacts with contractors, engineers, architects and others engaged in capital improvement projects, development projects and encroachments regarding progress, scheduling, project problems, plan interpretation, specification interpretation, testing and field measurements; may coordinate the work of consultants for testing and special inspections. 
  • Coordinates inspection and construction-related activities with contractors and utility companies, including conducting pre-construction meetings, preparing pay estimates, preparing change orders and scheduling inspections. 
  • Makes written recommendations about progress payments, contract change orders, and as-built plans. 
  • Reviews specifications and submittal requirements in construction contracts and inspects for compliance with all provisions and requirements; inspects for compliance with Cal OSHA safety requirements and contractors’ approved safety plans; inspects for compliance with storm water pollution plan and development projects to ensure compliance with specific plans and specifications. 
  • Responds to requests from the engineering staff to review and comment on plans, specifications and construction methods for upcoming projects. 
  • Resolves conflicts between plans and specifications, between plans and actual conditions, and between the intent and the reality of the project condition in a matter that does not increase the cost or timetable of a project. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Current California PE License preferred. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university preferred. 
  •  10 years of increasing responsibility related to construction inspection. 
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required. 
  • Thorough knowledge of major construction systems. 
  • Strong organizational/supervisory skills. 
  • Ability to work with personnel at all levels of development activity: public/private; contractors/workers. 
  • Ability to anticipate problems and master details. 
  • Knowledge of civil, structural and environmental design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, specifications, and estimates. 
  • Knowledge of: 
  1. Extensive knowledge of Caltrans standard plans and specifications, construction manual, procedures, and LAPM  
  2. Greenbook specifications 
  3. Engineering, surveying, construction and drafting concepts, construction equipment and related instruments 
  4. Construction materials, principles, practices, procedures and techniques 
  5. Engineering measurements, scales, calculations and estimates 
  6. Drafting practices and procedures, construction plans and specifications 
  7. Interpersonal/public communications techniques 
  8. Regulatory codes and practices, laws, statutes and ordinances governing construction projects per federal, state, county and city regulations 
  9. Computer application use and protocol 

Working Conditions

  • Requires extensive physical exertion during on-site inspection. 
  • Will require physical flexibility and dexterity, including the ability to continually stand, bend, stoop, reach, crouch and climb. 
  • May require sitting for long periods of time. 
  • Working with detailed, finely printed documents. 
  • Requires driving to and visiting job sites and clients.
