Construction Inspector

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, California

Summary

Under general supervision, the Construction Inspector performs detailed inspections of multi-disciplined public works and infrastructure construction and maintenance projects; reviews plans, details, specifications, and other construction contract documents to ensure construction contract compliance; prepares project inspection reports; and performs related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews specifications and submittal requirements in construction contracts
  • Monitor and document the Contractor’s field construction work, personnel, equipment, activities, work conditions, and materials for compliance with the project plans, specifications and codes;
  • Inspects for compliance with Cal OSHA safety requirements and contractors’ approved safety plans and storm water pollution prevention plan (SWPPP)
  • Coordinates inspection and construction-related activities with contractors, utilities, and material testing technicians
  • Facilitate field issues with the Contractor and inform the Resident Engineer of variances in the schedule, contract, or any other issues
  • Communicates and provides information and construction field support to the Resident Engineer and project team;
  • Tracks and documents bid item quantities and working days: provides written recommendations for Contractor progress payments and working day statements, and contract change orders
  • Maintains construction inspection files and logs; prepares reports, photo logs, correspondence, and other written field documentation
  • Update and maintain project plans for record drawings
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university desired.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction methods and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and understand details.
  • Knowledge of civil, structural and environmental design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Knowledge of:
    1. Engineering, surveying, construction equipment and related instruments.
    2. Construction materials, principles, practices, procedures and techniques.
    3. Engineering measurements, scales, calculations and estimates.
    4. Interpersonal and public communications techniques.
    5. Regulatory codes and practices, laws, statutes and ordinances governing construction projects per federal, state, county and city regulations.
    6. Computer application use and protocol.

Working Conditions

  • Requires extensive physical exertion during on-site inspection.
  • Will require physical flexibility and dexterity, including the ability to continually stand, bend, stoop, reach, crouch and climb.
  • May require sitting for long periods of time.
  • Working with detailed, finely printed documents.
  • Requires driving to and visiting job sites and clients.
