Code Enforcement Officer I

Location: Central Valley/Fresno/Sacramento Region, California


Under the direction of the Senior Code Enforcement Officer conducts all code enforcement duties as assigned, seeks guidance from a Code Enforcement Officer II on more difficult cases, learns to prepare all necessary documentation and performs other tasks as assigned.


This is the entry position in the Code Enforcement Officer series. The position of Code Enforcement Officer I is the first step in achieving a journey level as a Code Enforcement Officer. This position requires the ability to work independently on all basic code enforcement duties, ability to learn all relevant codes, increasing proficiency with all database materials, basic computer literacy, maintaining the right temperament for the job and the ability to assist and work effectively with all co-workers.


  • Works in conjunction with more senior code enforcement officers and is able to resolve basic code enforcement cases.
  • Provides accurate and timely record keeping for assigned code enforcement matters.
  • Communicates effectively with all parties on code enforcement related matters.
  • May testify regarding code enforcement cases that have progressed to legal proceedings.
  • Will become proficient in the use of and maintenance of existing database materials used in code enforcement matters.
  • Maintains and provides safekeeping for all assigned company property.
  • Adheres to all company and jurisdiction standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.


  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent, preferably supplemented by completion of an accredited technical school or college level program in code enforcement, building inspection, plan review, police sciences or a closely related field.
  • Experience as a Code Enforcement Officer I or equivalent for a minimum of one year, with additional experience in the building trades, planning, police services or other law enforcement profession considered.
  • Must be able to acquire a Basic Code Enforcement Officer Certification, as represented by CACEO and PC 832 Certification from an accredited college or law enforcement agency within one year of placement into this position.
  • Must be able to carry out the job requirements as a Code Enforcement Officer I.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required.
  • Have a satisfactory driving record.

Working Conditions

  • Requires extensive physical exertion during on-site inspections.
  • Will require physical flexibility and dexterity, including the ability to continually stand, bend, stoop, reach, crouch and climb.
  • Will drive to job sites and to visit clients.
