Assistant Resident Engineer

Location: Southern California, California


We are seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation projects including highway and public works to join our team in Southern California (Orange and/or Inland Empire offices).  

The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) must ensure the performance of assigned work complies with the requirements of the plans, standard specifications, and special provisions. The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) is in charge of field inspection as well as some administrative duties. 


  • Ensuring the contractor complies with all contract requirements. 
  • Coordinating required tests to ensure work quality. 
  • Keeping complete, accurate, and concise records of the work and quantities. 
  • Keeping the resident engineer informed of work progress and problems. 
  • Responding to any contractor questions about plans and specifications. The Assistant Resident Engineer must not direct the contractor’s work but must immediately notify the contractor when work is not in compliance. 
  • Acting professionally at all times. 


Working effectively by knowing construction methods and inspection techniques: 

  • Monitors and reviews contractor’s construction schedules.  
  • Performs engineering calculations, submittal review, shoring review, working drawing review, line and grades, quantity calculations, and similar engineering tasks.  
  • Interprets contract plans and specifications to contractors and other project participants.  
  • Inspects and approves contractors work and assure adherence to contract documents.  
  • Inspect delivery, placing, and curing of concrete and the placing of reinforcing steel.  
  • Prepares and files daily construction reports, diaries, and other project documents.  
  • Prepares and updates project logs for submittals, RFI’s, potential change orders and weekly statement of working days  
  • Verifies acceptability of material incorporated into the project and maintains material and inspection records.  
  • Maintains a daily diary, photo log, contract item quantities.  
  • Assists Resident Engineer with review of potential contract change orders.  
  • Assists Resident Engineer with change order preparation and ratification.  
  • Participates in contract claims and general claim avoidance.  
  • Serve as field engineer. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 


  • Minimum of 3+ years experience as a Senior Inspector. 
  • Current California PE License highly desired.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university. 
  • Experience in one or more areas of transportation, water, waste water or facility.  
  • Knowledge of Caltrans’ standard plans and specifications, construction manual, and LAPM. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required. 

Working Conditions

  • Requires extensive physical exertion during on-site inspection. 
  • Will require physical flexibility and dexterity, including the ability to continually stand, bend, stoop, reach, crouch and climb. 
  • May require sitting for long periods of time. 
  • Working with detailed, finely printed documents. 
  • Requires driving to and visiting job sites and clients.
