Some cities are defined by their landmarks. Marina, California is defined by its people.
Incorporated in 1975, Marina grew up alongside Fort Ord, once one of the largest Army training bases on the West Coast and home to up to 50,000 troops at its peak. When the base closed in 1994, the city faced a question many post-military communities know well: How do you redefine your identity when the institution that built you is gone? For Marina, the answer has been community. In 2012, the city was recognized as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise Alliance. That commitment has not slowed down.
On June 6, that commitment took center stage at the Grand Reopening of Glorya Jean Tate Park.
Glorya Jean Tate Park has long been a neighborhood anchor in Marina. After years of planning and community input, the city transformed it into something far greater. The reimagined park features a nearly 30,000-square-foot pump track for bicycles, scooters, and wheeled sports, alongside a dog park, basketball and pickleball courts, an exercise area, open turf, and shaded gathering spaces. Safe, accessible, and built for everyone.

June 6th was the kind of day a city remembers. Not because of a ribbon cutting, but because of what it represented. Years of planning, investment, and commitment to building something worthy of the people who live there. Kids took their first laps on the pump track, dogs bounded through the dog park, and neighbors gathered on the green, sharing a space that finally felt like it was made just for them.
Projects like this one are a reminder of why the work we do matters. What gets built is something harder to measure than square footage or permit counts. It is a signal to residents that they matter. Marina has always understood that, and we are proud to have played a part in proving it.
